What are the differences?

When it comes to books, there are various types to choose from, each with its own unique features. Boardbooks, hardcovers, flexicovers, and softcovers are the four most commonly used types, each offering distinct characteristics and benefits.

Boardbook, as the name suggests, is entirely made of sturdy cardboard, both for the cover and the inner pages. It usually uses 300/350 grams of one-sided coated cardboard, with the number of pages counted in spreads. Boardbooks can include integral flaps or puzzles, and the cover can be designed as a hardcover, providing a soft foam touch for young readers. The cardboard is finished with UV or press varnish for protection. On the other hand, hardcovers feature a rigid, non-bendable cover made of greyboard of varying thickness. The greyboard is covered with 130 gsm coated paper, with options for different materials like linen. 

Hardcover books can be sewn or glued bound, with the spine available in straight or round shape. Additional features like headbands, bookmarks, and various laminates and finishes can be added to enhance the appearance. 

Flexicovers, also known as integral bindings, offer a flexible yet durable option for book covers. Made from 250 gsm coated cardboard, flexicovers combine the elements of soft and hardcovers, providing a unique binding style with options for headbands and bookmarks. The spine can be straight or round, based on preference. 

Lastly, softcovers feature a flexible cover made from coated graphic or cardboard, with flaps on both front and back covers. Softcovers can be sewn, glued, or Otabind, offering different binding options to suit the book's needs. Various embellishments like spot UV, foiling, and embossing can be added to enhance the overall design. Each type of book offers its own advantages and aesthetic appeal, catering to different preferences and needs.
